A movie worth seeing once…

Since January 1st, I have been to the movies 9 times (a high number for me!) but have only seen 5 movies. I end up watching them twice! I saw Sing, Moana, Beauty and the Beast, and now Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 twice in theaters. The one exception is the Lego Batman Movie, which surprises me because I was most looking forward to that one. (I just Googled it and there is a showing of Lego Batman at a theater in Oak Creek…if I hustle, I could make it…just kidding, not that committed.)

Prior to this year, I don’t think I have ever seen a movie twice in theaters. It just doesn’t logically make sense to pay that much to see the same movie. Yet I have done it 4 times this year! Why?! Have the movies been that much better? I don’t think so. It is more that I have a lot of friends I like seeing movies with…so I go, again and again.

Though I know it doesn’t make sense financially, I like seeing movies in theaters more than once. The second time around I get to remember my previous thoughts and emotions as well as experience new ones as I pay attention to other details. Perhaps what I am really enjoying is just seeing the movie twice in a short span of time. I wonder if I would enjoy the experience as much with a regular DVD?

I conclude from this: a movie worth seeing once is worth seeing twice!

Seeing “kids’ movies” without kids

“I want to see that movie!” I whispered to my sister as another preview lit up the darkened movie theater.

Anna nodded and then muttered, “Lameeee!” at a stupid car commercial.

It was pre-previews and I didn’t think we were being too loud. Apparently the woman behind us did, however.

“PLEASE. Be. Quiet.” she hissed angrily.

Embarrassed, we lapsed into silence and the movie began. I was feeling annoyed and wanted to hiss a few angry retorts myself, but I recognized we were probably in the wrong. Annoyance turned to sheepishness and I tried to be on my best behavior and not laugh too loudly in case it annoyed our neighbor even more. As the movie ended, the woman leaned forward and said something to Anna that I didn’t catch before grabbing her child (who was kicking the back of my chair) and walking out.

I expected some grumpy comment but Anna just looked slightly baffled. “She said she was impressed that we came and saw a children’s movie without any children.”

I don’t know if the lady was being sarcastic or not, but if only that poor woman knew! I’ve been to the movies four times in the past month: twice to see Moana and twice to see Sing and not once was I accompanied by a child. Some movies are just worth watching, regardless of their intended audience. So….take that crabby, ageist movie going lady!

(Also, may I add, I CANNOT WAIT for the Lego Batman movie. I’m definitely seeing it in theaters too.)

I’ve now seen the new Disney princess movie, Moana, twice! It is really cute and has great music; I was pleasantly surprised by Dwayne Johnson’s ability to sing. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s influence is definitely apparent, though more so in the CD/soundtrack than the film. I personally would have preferred a little romance but the adventure was fun. Moana reminded me of Merida.

Still not as good as Tangled. That is the best princess movie ever.

From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. “Moana” sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.:

Look how cute Baby Moana is!
