“But sometimes she was foolish. Sometimes, her storybook self became curious enough to lower a braid and let a prince climb up or, worse, to follow a prince out of the tower and down to the ground. Those were the scariest stories. In Rapunzel’s favorite book, a particularly persuasive prince lured her into a bleak wasteland that crawled with repulsive, ground-dwelling people. Peasants, the book called them, and they were nasty things.”

I accidentally read the sequel to this book, Disenchanted: The Trials of Cinderella, first. I absolutely loved it. This one seems to have been less-popular with my Goodreads friends, but intriguing none the less. I’m excited.

“You want to order? I got other customers to think about.”
He looked around the deserted cafe as the 7UP clock clicked loud and lonely on the far wall. “Other customers? Where?”
“On their way over here.”
“Oh.” (pg. 6-7)

I just finished a business book and a psychological thriller, so now I’m aiming for something a little more light-hearted. I think this one will fit the bill quite nicely.

This is more than a sentence or two but it cracked me up….

“Bucket had started his criminal career in Braas…There, he had gotten together with some like-minded peers and started the motorcycle club called The Violence. Bucket was the leader; he decided which newsstand was to be robbed of cigarettes next. He was the one who had chosen the name – The Violence, in English, not Swedish. And he was the one who unfortunately asked his girlfriend Isabella to sew the name of the motorcycle club onto ten newly stolen leather jackets. Isabella had never really learned to spell properly at school, not in Swedish, and certainly not in English.
The result was that Isabella sewed
The Violins on the jackets instead. As the rest of the club members had had similar academic success, nobody in the group noticed the mistake.” (page 79)

“I was twelve years of age when I chopped of my hair, dressed as a boy, and set off to save my family from ruin. I made it almost to the end of my front garden.” (1)

Isn’t that a great intro? I’m only half way through but this book has been super charming and fun so far. I can’t wait to find out what happens next. When in a reading slump, it never hurts to head back to Juvenile fiction.

Teaser…Friday?

I forgot to do a Tuesday teaser on Tuesday and I probably won’t do one this coming Tuesday so I’m doing a Teaser Friday…I just couldn’t resist with this book.

“Hark,” he said, his tone very dry. “What stone through yonder window breaks?”
Kami yelled up at him, “It is the east, and Juliet is a jerk!”
Jared abandoned Shakespeare and demanded, “What do you think you’re doing?”
“Throwing a pebble,” said Kami defensively. “Uh… and I’ll pay for the window.”
Jared vanished and Kami was ready to start shouting again, when he reemerged with the pebble clenched in his fist. “This isn’t a pebble! This is a rock.”
“It’s possible that your behaviour has inspired some negative feelings that caused me to pick a slightly overlarge pebble,” Kami admitted.

This book was a blast to read. The characters smash YA stereotypes and the dialogue is hilarious and witty. I can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel!
