As you might imagine, I don’t often meet people in person who out-read me. I know they exist. I am friends with them on Goodreads. But once I started regularly passing 300…it became rare.
One of my co-workers read over 500 books last year.
Here is the thing…we have very different tastes in books.
Which is not, in itself, a problem. The problem is that she is on Goodreads. And we are friends on Goodreads. So when she recommends her Favorite Series of All Times and I give it 1 star and Rip It To Shreds…
It makes things awkward.
Like, she-didn’t-make-eye-contact-with-me-at-work-today awkward.
I feel a little guilty. But I’m also not going to hide how much I loathe the Pink Carnation series?
It is a conundrum because I still have like a dozen books she recommended I already checked out from the library and my expectations for all of them are….limited.
I’ve never felt so high maintenance in my reading before.

I generally know whose recs I have a chance of liking and whose I’d rather not bother with. I’m extremely picky and whenever I run through a favorite, I once again decide that, this is it, I’ve read every author I’d could ever love and have run out of books.
